#88 Encounter

The next four tree stories #87 – #90 are from RUC- CW Mount West Series. They emerge from a special collaboration between Xi Shan (Western Hills of Beijing ) and Renmin University Creative Writing team and the World Literature Centre .

Yang Lianjiao, a senior undergraduate student majoring in French at Renmin University of China, loves the blue sky and white clouds, is fond of trees and streams, and aspires to explore the world.

Esther ’s words

Stepping into the Bussière Garden in the Western Hills of Beijing, the wind rises and the leaves sway gently, as if telling the years spent with Mr. Bussière. Here, the horse chestnut trees stand tall and lush, guarding silently like sentries, witnessing the years of a Frenchman—Jean Jérome Augustin Bussière. The horse chestnut tree was planted here by Mr. Bussière a hundred years ago, and it has taken root here, witnessing the Sino-French friendship through historical changes. The land where the horse chestnut tree grows is Mr. Bussière’s residence as well as a “bridge” for Sino-French cultural exchange. A hundred years ago, as a doctor of the French embassy in China, Mr. Bussière saved countless lives with his outstanding medical skills, actively promoted Chinese youth to study in France, and helped the Chinese people fight against invaders. Today, these trees are still tall and green, a gift from Mr. Bussière that spans time and space.

Memory Palace of Tree Stories is a socio-ecolical art practice which invites you to tell a story or share information about trees . It is a creative-led social enquiry of how we can live well for both personal and collective wellbeing. Your story can be any kind of tree story , a personal tree story, an ecological tree story , an environmental tree story, an historical tree story or even a botanical tree story.
