The next 4 tree stories (#122-125) were recorded at the Earth Charter +25 event in The Hague in July 2025 .

David Voelker is a professor of American and Environmental history at the University of Wisconsin – Green Bay, USA, home to the Menominee and Ho Chunk First Nations peoples. To read more about Davids work on Land Acknowledgement of First Nations Peoples  Click here.

David gave this story just before we took the walk in “the Forest  that owns Itself” at ‘Bos dat van Zichzelf is’ near Doorn the Netherlands during the last day of the Earth Charter +25 event July 2025.

In order to keep this story within a minute there are a few details which needed to be omitted in the video.   David refers to his tree with the pronoun ‘Ki’  at the end of his story , which was originally coined by the renowned Robin Wall Kimmerer who is of the Potawami nation who uses the term Ki to refer to other earth beings. David’s story is about an ancient Western Redcedar on Cortes Island east of Vancouver in British Colombia, likely to be an ancient survivor of colonial times.

This is our first tree story on video from the US .

David’s words:

As I was hiking and walking in the woods by myself there ( on Cortes Island)

and I encountered this incredible Western Redcedar

The tree was obviously very old and I immediately had the realization

that this tree was probably there before colonization began .

I walked around this tree and I discovered this massive scar and

actually a hole in the tree from fire damage.

And I felt drawn to enter , to go into this cavity

So I made a small offering

the tree had been severely damaged by fire

It had just tremendous resilience ,

So I found that very inspiring , very humbling ,

to share that connection with this ancient elder .

Because most of the other big trees had been cut down ,

because this tree was damaged long ago, Ki had been spared .

Here was this amazing vibrant tree.
