Amanda Shasha tells a very special heartbreaking story about a tree in Carlow’s town park.
I have walked past this tree dozens of times on walks with my own mother this past winter and spring and now I recognise it as Ethan’s Tree.
Amanda’s words
Hi everyone , I have chosen this tree because
in 2020 my son was diagnosed with terminal cancer.
So at that time was during Covid and then with lock downs everywhere .
So we used to come here to the Carlow park , just to while up time .
So I would carry them on top of this tree, both of them they were a little bit younger then
‘This used to be my brothers tree but now he is in heaven ‘ (Jethro speaking )
He passed away in July 2021 , so a few months ago we were just walking around the park as usual , and then he said to me , Oh Mammy , this is my brother’s tree , this is Ethans Tree .
From that day I knew that he marked it in his head that this is my brothers tree .
So when he grows up this is what he will grow to remember
This is the tree I have chosen, that is the story behind the tree.

Open Call for your tree story on video
Memory Palace of Tree Stories is a socio-ecological art practice which invites you to tell a story or share information about trees . It is a creative-led social enquiry of how we can live well for both personal and collective wellbeing. Your story can be any kind of tree story , a personal tree story, an ecological tree story , an environmental tree story, an historical tree story or even a botanical tree story. I do hope you can contribute a comment on how we can live better with the greater community of life.
The year 2023 we continue to gather your stories in the form of one minute videos and we are really looking forward to hearing your tree story . I can be contacted directly on this platform or on the contact page on this website.
